Personal Philosophy Statement on Diversity in MFT ââ¬Å"The multicultural training movement has indeed contributed to a greater and much needed understanding of the differences among various racial, ethnic, and cultural groups (Speight, Myers, Cox and Highlen, 1991).â⬠In looking at this statement counselors will need to expand their thinking outside of the Western European contexts. There is a difference between Western culture and other cultures. Sue Sue, 2012 states ââ¬Å" each cultural/racial group may have its own distinct interpretation of reality and offer a different perspective on the nature of people, the origin of disorders, standards for judging normality and abnormality, and therapeutic approaches. (p. 45).â⬠As we are brought together with more cultures it is imperative to understand the differences, which will enable counselors to become culturally competent. Diversity In the knowledge of multicultural diversity a counselor will continue learning about his or her clientele in order to understand their needs better. A good knowledge base of clients will enable the counselor to meet all the needs of his or her clients. Counselors will develop the skills and intervention strategies that will be best used for their cultural diverse clients. Based upon the idea that counseling was mostly set for white clients, counselors will need to make adjustments especially with models of counseling that may be used based upon the ethnicity of the client.
